Recover Missing Photo Locations for a Travel Map

Diagnose why the GPS is missing

Missing location data usually comes from disabled camera permissions, weak positioning at capture time, compression by chat or social apps, screenshots, or edited exports. Diagnose the cause before choosing a recovery path.

If only some photos are affected, transfer or editing is the likely cause. If every photo lacks GPS, camera location permission was probably disabled.

Recover original files and metadata first

Original HEIC/JPEG files are the most likely to retain capture time and location. Check the phone library, camera card, and cloud originals before trying to rebuild coordinates by hand.

If conversion is necessary, use a metadata-preserving method and inspect a converted sample before importing the full album.

Add manual stops when originals cannot be recovered

Manual placement should be limited to the few photos that cannot be recovered. Avoid using guesses for many points because that weakens the credibility of the route.

1. List the missing photo locations in the order you remember visiting them.
2. Mark only key nodes: departures, turns, stops, and arrivals.
3. Place the point at city, landmark, or street level rather than inventing an exact door number.
4. Check that manually added points fit the capture times of adjacent photos.
5. Review the full route for impossible cross-city jumps.

Keep accuracy and privacy boundaries clear

A photo-driven route represents where photos were taken, not a complete continuous track. When GPS is missing, state the uncertainty instead of presenting estimated segments as measured data.

Review the first, last, and accommodation locations before sharing. Limited accuracy should never be a reason to expose a home address or another sensitive place.
